Drink Heartily is a romantic ode to the love potion— that magical, lusty elixir, as legendary as it is infamous. As if ripped from the grimoire of a medieval sorceress, this print is an imagined spell page instructing on the creation of a potent love philtre. Mandrake root, apple seeds, and snakeskin sheds boil and bubble while a few more curious ingredients are thrown in for good measure. The potion is bottled as incantations are recited over the vessel. Now, the blissful brew is destined for the lips of an unfortunate soul, spellbound to the eternal flame of the love witch!

This print itself is an aphrodisiac for the eye, a simmering optic philtre, captivating in its old-world charm and seductive in its mysterious details. Starting with the essences of Pennsylvania Dutch fraktur (folk art) and Medieval illuminated manuscripts, Drink Heartily blends these two inspirations with the enchanting aesthetic and mystifying atmosphere of grimoires from throughout history. Into the mix is added a dash of flavor from Renaissance engravings. Lastly, the concentrated memory of a lost Victorian treasure infuses the philtre with romance. The result is an enticing visual brew, full-bodied and enchanting down to the last drop!

Part of what brought this work into being was the memory of a special antique that I came across many years ago— A heart-shaped silver flask engraved with the words “Drink Heartily” in a particularly unforgettable Victorian font. I was magnetized to the romantic energy surrounding the flask but regrettably, I passed it up. However, like a lost love, memories of the silver flask simmered in my mind for years and it is in those hauntings that this screen print was spawned.
