Vitriol is an artwork based on alchemy and the search for the soulful fire of spiritual transformation. The Phoenix is a symbol of the continuous cycle of life, death, and rebirth, but even deeper, in the realm of alchemy, the Phoenix represents the ongoing cycle of bettering oneself to reach the pinnacle of human enlightenment which can often take a soul multiple lifetimes to achieve. As two allegories within alchemy, The Red King and The White Queen, symbolize the union of opposites to create a greater whole and this union is often referred to as 'The Chemical Marriage.' The king represents the sun, fire, and masculine energy whereas the queen is a symbol of the moon, water, and feminine energies. The symbolism of these monarchs goes even deeper to relate the king to the element of sulphur which is active and fiery, and the queen to the element of mercury which is passive, flowing, and watery. This marriage in combination with the element of salt leads to the ultimate goal of alchemy which is the perfecting of the soul, known as 'The Great Work' and also 'The Philosopher's Stone.' The idea of turning base metals into gold is a metaphor for this process, for gold is the most pure of all metals. The work is often symbolically abbreviated by the 'alchemical trinity', made up of Sulphur, Mercury, and Salt. Sulphur stands for the soul, mercury for the spirit, and salt for the physical body and vessel in which the great work takes place. Vitriol is an illustration based on these alchemical concepts and the traditional symbolism of alchemy. Encircling the composition is a ring that reads "Visita Interiora terrae rectificando invenies occultum lapidem." which is a latin inscription loosely interpreted to mean "Visit the interior and through rectification (purification) you will find the hidden stone." Abbreviated as V.I.T.R.I.O.L., this inscription is an instruction to dig deep within yourself, burn away the negativity, and strive for purification which spawns spiritual enlightenment and perfection of the soul. When this pinnacle is reached, one has completed the great work and possesses the Philosopher's stone.
