The Poppet Love Spell two-color screen print

The Poppet Love Spell is a seal that alludes to the use of poisonous plants in casting a love spell. At the center of a 6-pointed star rests a mandrake poppet, a talisman utilized in sympathetic magic to control or inflict harm to a victim. Flowers of Henbane and Datura seed pods surround the poppet, for both were common ingredients in medieval philtres. The symbol of Saturn rests above the poppet, for Saturn reigns over the underworld and therefore is the ruler of almost all poisonous plants. His dominion over the realms of responsibility, boundaries, and discipline also make him a fit deity for the volatile nature of poisonous plants, in which there is a fine line between a dosage of medicinal value and that of a deadly poison.
This drawing first debuted in the 2019 Love Spell Puzzle Purse Valentines (sold out) where it was only 5" x 5". Here, it has been enlarged to spotlight the design and its mixture of occult iconography and folk art style.
