The Queen and What Follows is an illustration that depicts an illuminated and empowered witch on the poison path. Her energy is connected with the plant spirit of Poppy, which grows from her shadowy gown, drapes her arms, and extends into the delicate grasp of her hands. The Poppy is a plant that symbolizes death, mourning, blood, sleep, and remembrance, making it an excellent ally when practicing dreamwork, shadow work, ancestral magic, and working with chthonic deities. From witches’ ointments to opium dens to Oz, the poppy is a poisonous plant of infamy and adoration in equal measure. Like many other baneful plants, its volatile nature means there is a fine line between a medicinal dosage for healing and a fatal dosage of poison. For this reason, the poison path requires the utmost dedication, patience, and control from the witch. In studying these plants and learning from them, she expands her understanding of boundaries and fortifies her own in response. She knows that to maintain balance, death and life must exist equally. The bond she has built with the Poppy is now much more than just a connection— it is armor, knowledge, and supportive, protective magic.
In this illustration, the enlightened Queen’s dedication to the poison path has granted her knowledge, power, and balance in her life. She uses her magical practices to help those in need, whether it be medicine or bringing death to those who deserve it. An ambassador to the shadows, The Queen will deal your hand.
