As Mandrake is a nightshade that entices the senses, it has long been used as an aphrodisiac and found its way into Medieval philtres and love spells as well as every step of the cycle of fertility. The personality of this plant spirit is sensual yet light-hearted and playful. It is a great plant ally in healing sexual trauma and can lead you back to feeling the spirited, fun side of sexuality. With this drawing I wanted to create a portrait of Mandrake that was unabashedly carnal and inviting, depicting the plant’s ability to raise your sexual energy as well as help one rise from trauma and reclaim their autonomy. The Alraune’s form takes on a mermaid-like quality that further alludes to her seductive nature.
