Solstice Ride is a wintery work created to honor the Roman goddess Diana, specifically her role as guardian of wild animals and leader of the wild hunt. The earliest reference to night travel can be found in the 10th century text the Canon Episcopi, written in 907 CE. This ancient manuscript notes that “certain” women (i.e. witches) were seduced by demons and openly confessed to riding upon beasts alongside Diana in the dead of night. Beyond this text, there are occult beliefs of Diana as leader of the astral procession— a horde that included all manner of creatures, witches, and otherworldly beings. Led by Diana, this procession would gather lost souls and escort them to the gates of the underworld.

In Solstice Ride, Diana is illuminated in all her pagan glory— strong and powerful atop a wild beast. Horns sprout from the crown of her head in reference to her traits as goddess of wild animals and goddess of the moon. Holly adorns the goat’s mane as its berries act as a symbol of the fertility and vitality of the goddess. The blasting horn Diana wears at her hip represents her leadership in nature and her connection to the divine, for angels also carry horns. Framing the scene is a banner that bears sigils representing the turning of the yearly wheel and nature’s reawakening.

This work was originally created for the 2021 holiday card given out by Three Hands Press.
